Fundamental Microbiology – origin of life, environmental limits of life, evolution and diversification of metabolism, roles in biosphere, basic cellular processes, development of cell-cell communication and multi-cellular structures, morphogenesis, quorum sensing, development of epidemics, molecular mechanisms of pathogenicity, host-pathogen interaction, ecology, and geomicrobiology.

Applied Microbiology – production of fuels and bulk and fine chemicals, bioremediation, development of diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics, detection and prevention of microbial contamination in the food supply.

A student-led independent research project in one of the participating laboratories

Career sessions on gaining admission to a Ph.D. program and pursuing graduate studies productively
Training in cutting edge genomic technologies through lectures and a visit to the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute Core Laboratories

Training in program management: The trainees will help to manage the program through participation on committees.

UC Irvine Chem-SURF 2013

The Chem-SURF Program at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), provides a 10-week summer research opportunity for undergraduates to become fully immersed in challenging, cutting-edge, exciting, and transformative interdisciplinary research projects in the fields of chemical biology, chemical physics, computer science, molecular biology, nanoscience, pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacology, and analytical, atmospheric, biochemistry, bioinorganic, bioorganic, computational, environmental, inorganic, materials, organic, physical, polymer, surface and theoretical chemistry.

Who Should Apply?
Applicants should be highly motivated and high-achieving science majors with sophomore, junior, or senior standing at the start of the Chem-SURF program. They must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have health insurance coverage. Our program is committed to promoting diversity in the fields of science. Women, underrepresented groups, individuals from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds, and persons with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply. UCI undergraduates may apply to participate in the Chem-SURF activities, but no financial support is available through this program. UCI undergraduates should apply for stipend support from other sources.

Pathways Intern Program Student Volunteers Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program Science And Engineering Apprentice Program Intern Program Information for NRL personnel (only)
Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) (Formerly known as Cooperative Education Program (CO-OP)) Applications are accepted from students on a year round basis and are kept on file in the Human Resources Office (HRO) for 6 months. Managers interested in hiring a SCEP student can contact the HRO Student Program Coordinator, Code 1810, to review applications on file. Some applications may be viewed electronically. Once a candidate has been identified, Divisions must submit a Request for Personnel Action (RPA), a requirements document (RD) (generic RDs are used for Career Level I), the selectees’ resume and current transcript. The Program Coordinator will work with the school’s co-op office to prepare the written agreement. See additional information below under Personnel Actions Required SCEP students are eligible for payment of school tuition and books, provided the following conditions are met: The student is enrolled in a shortage category or hard-to-fill occupation (i.e., engineering, computer science, physical sciences.) The division in which the student is employed fully intends to convert the student to a permanent position upon graduation. The student agrees in writing that upon graduation, he/she will continue to work at NRL for a period equal to three times the length of time for which tuition assistance was paid. Supervisors interested in recommending a student for the tuition assistance program must forward a written request to the SCEP Program Coordinator. The student must meet with the SCEP Program Coordinator to go over program requirements. The Head of the Personnel Operations Branch, Code 1810, gives final approval for entry into the tuition assistance program. You may apply online OR You may apply by mail. Internships

Students typically participate in the Intern Program during their summer break. Co-ops

The Co-op Program at Monsanto generally requires a semester-long commitment (January through June or June through December) to a full time position. You’ll integrate your classroom learnings with practical work experience thru individual and team based projects. Assignments closely relate to your field of study, which increase in complexity as you progress toward your academic degree.

Intern Biological Chemistry at GNF

The department of Biological Chemistry at GNF has an internship available for a chemistry major. GNF applies integrated state-of-the-art technologies in chemistry, biology, automation, and information sciences in order to pursue new approaches towards the understanding of complex biomedical problems in cancer biology, immunology, neuroscience, and metabolic as well as infectious disease. The successful candidate will participate in natural products isolation and synthesis of novel bioactive organic molecules. Applicants should have completed one year of general and organic chemistry and be familiar with basic organic laboratory technique.
