(deadline: February 15, 2013)

The Northwestern University Materials Research Science & Engineering Center offers a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)program over a 9-week period each summer.

The NU-Materials Research Science and Engineering Center is an interdisciplinary program focused on multi-functional nanoscale material structures. Over 35 faculty from 9 different departments are involved. REU students will have the opportunity to contribute to a research project led by a center faculty member and will participate in interdisciplinary research group meetings, expanding their science and engineering experience into a range of fields. Students with an interest in nanomaterials and majoring in a science or engineering field are encouraged to apply. Each student will be assigned to a graduate student or post-doctoral associate mentor who will work closely with them.

For an overview of Center research, please view the MRSEC research and highlights websites. Past projects have included polymer nanocomposites, nanopyramid fabrications, synthesis of functional molecules, electronic band structure calculations, and art conservation. A list of some previous projects is available. A range of projects each summer is available both in experimental and theoretical/simulation fields.

The participants write a technical paper at the end of the summer and give a 15-minute presentation on their research at a symposium that is open to the public. Other activities include a field trip to a national or industrial lab, a beach party, and a panel discussion about graduate school and seminars by Northwestern faculty and graduate students. On-campus housing is offered to all participants, so you may be living on the same hallway as your colleagues. Chicago is only a half an hour away with easily accessible public transportation and the Taste of Chicago takes place in early July.
REU participants receive a stipend of $4,500, plus on-campus housing and a travel allowance. The program dates for the summer of 2013 are June 24 to August 23. Since our start date is later than most other REU programs, this is the perfect summer program for students whose schools are on the quarter-system!

While there is no strict GPA requirement, the GPA of admitted students is typically above 3.5. There is an opportunity for you to explain if difficult circumstances have detracted from your GPA, and we do look favorably upon students who can work through adversity. Most recipients are rising junior and seniors. We seldom admit younger students, though if you have already had some independent research experience, you may still be in the running. You must not have completed your degree before the program begins. The program is open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
