Janssen Research & Development, L.L.C, a member of Johnson & Johnson’s Family of Companies is recruiting for R&D Summer 2013 Interns. Positions may be located in Radnor (PA), Malvern (PA, Spring House (NJ), Raritan (NJ), San Diego (CA) or La Jolla (CA).

Janssen Research & Development, L.L.C. develops treatments that improve the health and lifestyles of people worldwide. Research and development areas encompass novel targets in neurologic disorders, gastroenterology, oncology, infectious disease, diabetes, hematology, metabolic disorders, immunologic disorders, and reproductive medicine.

Janssen Research & Development, L.L.C. offers a variety of Pharmaceutical R&D intern positions in several Pennsylvania, New Jersey or California locations. These individual openings provide students with an opportunity to become an essential part of their respective departments. These assignments offer the students the opportunity to work in either a laboratory or operations setting. This hands-on exposure allows the students to develop and participate in the planning, execution, reporting and data analysis of a wide variety of lab experiments under the guidance from an experienced scientist/engineer or work with cross-functional teams to implement special projects involving capacity or process improvements and cost savings. Interested candidates should have a strong desire to learn the drug development process and contribute to improving the health of people worldwide.

Positions may be available in (but not limited to) the following areas:

Biologics Clinical Pharmacology Sciences: conducts nonclinical and clinical study sample bioanalysis to determine the concentration of Centocor drug products and anti-drug immune response in biological matrices. Scientists, develop and validate new assays and evaluate new technologies for immunoassay development. Once, the assay is transferred to the bioanalytical department, the assays are conducted and reports are written with interpretation of the data. These reports are added to submissions to Health Authority agencies for approval of our products. Centocor is a leader in mAb drug development with successful products and various new therapies in clinical trials. (Locations: PA – Radnor)

Biologics Research: is the starting point and driver for innovative drug development. Scientists, with world-class expertise in a wide variety of subjectsand therapeutic areas, work in a multidisciplinary manner to identify drug targets and pathways that are suspected to play a role in diseases ranging from Cancer to Asthma. Once identified, technology experts apply a particular drug platform to design a compound that modulates the target or pathway in a precise manner. The ‘core’ technology platform for Centocor is monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy where the compound is a complex protein derived from the human immune defense system. Centocor is a leader in mAb drug development with successful products and various new therapies in clinical trials. (Locations: PA – Radnor or CA – San Diego)

Biomarkers: is involved in supporting the development and application of biomarkers for Immunology and Oncology drug development programs. The biomarker goals are integrated into the compound development team (CDT) goals and include evaluation of the pharmacologic audit trail to confirm that an experimental agent is interacting with its molecular target in the appropriate disease tissue, that it is having the expected effect on the target and downstream pathway at a safe and tolerable dose. Subsequently, the biomarker team identifies predictive biomarkers for selected programs for use in selecting patients most likely to respond to a targeted therapy. (Location: PA – Radnor)

Drug Safety Sciences: is involved in supporting safety assessments for drug development programs throughout J&J, involving cancer, pain, asthma, and metabolic and CNS diseases. These studies help optimize drug leads and drive them to their first-in-human trials. Scientists contributing to these results are from the departments of Pathology, Genetic Toxicology, and Investigative Toxicology and Safety Biomarkers. Many different analytical technologies, some proven and traditional, others cutting-edge, are used to ascertain the effects of a drug and provide valuable information about possible adverse events. This information is a required part of the final submission to regulatory agencies such as the FDA. (Location: NJ – Raritan)

Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK): a part of Drug Safety Sciences conducts research into identification and quantitation of endogenous biomarkers of cytochrome P450 3A4, as well as other P450 isoforms as surrogate markers of drug-drug interactions in humans. Additional areas of research include metabolism of therapeutic peptides and proteins, and covalent modification of proteins. (Location: NJ – Raritan)

Drug Transporters: the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) department of Drug Safety Sciences is involved in examining transport of compounds using various mammalian expression systems and other cutting edge methodologies. These data are used to mechanistically understand the disposition of compounds and assess potential for drug-drug interactions and/or issues related to the disposition of compounds in man. (Location: NJ – Raritan)

Immunology Discovery: is a function dedicated to the identification of new targets that play a role in immune mediated disease e.g. Rheumatoid Arthritis. Once identified, the Discovery teams use in vitro cell-based and in vivo pharmacology systems to validate the targets role in certain disease pathways and, when ready, partner with small and large molecule drug platform teams to develop high quality therapeutics that modulate the target and pathway. Once developed, Discovery scientists support the pre-clinical and clinical development paths leading to the eventual launch of the product e.g. Stelara®, a monoclonal antibody that inhibits IL-12/23 and is used for the treatment of Psoriasis. (Locations: PA-Radnor, CA-La Jolla)

Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing Sciences (PDMS): is the organization that takes the new molecules identified by the Discovery group, and turns them into a reality….we transform molecules into medicine! We work cross functionally to develop the technology used in the large-scale manufacture of pharmaceutical products. We develop the processes for bulk and drug product formulation along with the analytical methods used to assure the quality of our processes and product. We have groups developing the devices used to deliver the drug formulations safely and effectively and the packages used to assure the integrity of product delivered to our patients. The group is also responsible for the manufacture of toxicology supplies and clinical supplies in our Pilot Plant facilities. However, our work does not stop with the commercialization of the process. PDMS is also responsible for ongoing technical support of our commercialized products throughout their life cycle. (Locations: PA – Radnor, Malvern, Springhouse or NJ – Raritan)

Neuroscience: discovers medicines to treat neuropsychiatric diseases – especially disorders of mood and cognition. Our discovery strategy focuses in part on the use of highly translatable preclinical models. To enhance this key effort, we now seek a highly motivated candidate to participate in behavioral work related to mood and cognition. The candidate will work on established models, help set up novel models, and combine behavior with molecular and cellular biology techniques, in order to develop novel approaches for CNS therapeutics. The candidate will be an active participant in a research environment working with a team of experienced behavioral pharmacologists. (Locations: CA- La Jolla)

Qualifications

Candidates must be working towards a B.S., M.S., or PhD degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemical, Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or other science/lifescience related concentration. The successful candidate will be familiar with a basic scientific techniques and experience working in a laboratory environment.

Here’s a learning environment like no other!

DuPont Industrial Biosciences believes strongly in supporting future generations. We’ve developed several opportunities for students to gain the valuable experience they’ll need to succeed in today’s demanding job market.
Science Internships

Our R&D Center in Palo Alto, California offers an intensive 13-week science internship program, in which interns develop a science project and take part in a variety of learning activities. You won’t spend your summer in just a single department or lab – DuPont Industrial Biosciences interns get exposure to a broad range of scientific disciplines. At the end of the program you’ll deliver a presentation of your ideas and findings, developing invaluable real-life skills.
Business Internships

We also offer internships in our technical marketing and applied innovations teams, for both undergraduates and those pursuing their post-graduate degrees. Students gain valuable experience in our unique industry, and work on relevant projects that provide immediate value to the business teams. Successful interns are first on our candidate list should a position open that matches their skills. Some of our most successful employees began their careers as interns at DuPont Industrial Biosciences!
Operations Internships

The Operations organization offers internships in a variety of areas, providing hands-on opportunities to learn, develop and contribute to the organization. For example, internships in our engineering area give students the opportunity to manage a project designed to improve our production process and lower our organizational costs. Throughout the project, interns present summaries sharing what they have learned and ideas for improvement with the rest of the organization.

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s (SERC) Internship Program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and education. This program enables students to work on specific projects under the direction of SERC’s professional staff and is tailored to provide the maximum educational benefit to each participant.

Since 2001 the SERC internship program has been designated a REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) site by the National Science Foundation. With this funding, along with generous donations from the Smithsonian Women’s Committee, and University partnerships we are able to provide internship opportunities to qualified undergraduate students looking to further their knowledge in the sciences.

Projects include terrestrial, atmospheric and estuarine environmental research within the disciplines of ecology, biology, chemistry, microbiology, botany, zoology, mathematics and physics. Projects are also offered in environmental education and environmental information management (See Project Menu). Although students will become familiar with all the research being conducted by a particular staff member and with much of the research of SERC in general, individuals will devote most of their time to a project and content area of particular interest to them. Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge in a selected field of study and to learn a variety of research techniques through firsthand experience. At the conclusion of the internship, student participants will be expected to present the findings of their independent projects in a formal seminar to the SERC community.

As an additional educational benefit, SERC maintains an ongoing seminar program that is designed to bring in noted outside speakers on a variety of topics in the environmental sciences. During the program’s spring and summer seasons, field trips to research facilities and Smithsonian museums conducting similar programs are also coordinated.

Eligibility and Appointment
The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center will consider applications from currently enrolled undergraduate and beginning graduate students, or students who have recently graduated from an undergraduate or Masters program. Applicants must be in a position to commit fully to the completion of a project. U.S. citizenship is not a requirement to participate in this program.

Selection is based upon the student’s academic credentials, extent of relevant training or experience, letters of recommendation, and the congruence of the student’s expressed goals with those of the internship program. The Smithsonian does not discriminate on grounds of race, creed, sex, age, marital status, handicap or national origin of any applicant.

The specific dates and duration of the internship appointment are arranged between the supervisor and the student. However, internship appointments are generally fulltime (40 hours per week), 12 to 16 weeks in length, and coincide with the usual academic semesters and summer terms.

Academic Credit
The Smithsonian awards no academic credit for studies conducted at the Institution. However, the Office of Professional Training is eager to assist in establishing mechanisms for universities to award credit upon satisfactory completion of projects. Representatives of colleges and universities wishing to develop formal agreements of this nature with the Smithsonian may contact the Office of Fellowships & Internships or SERC. In lieu of this, students are encouraged to work out arrangements directly with their advisors and departments.

Financial/Living Arrangements
Selected candidates will receive a stipend of $500.00 per week. Limited on-site dormitory space may be available for $105.00 per week. SERC does not supply board, although cooking facilities and utensils are available. The two campus dorms can accommodate up to 24 residents (Schmidt has 6 single rooms and Green Village has 8 double rooms and two single rooms). SERC is located in a semi-rural area seven miles south of the nearest public transportation lines, therefore it is strongly recommended to bring a vehicle for personal transportation, if possible. References may also be available for room rentals in the local area; personal transportation would be necessary for this option.

Social Events
Numerous social events are sponsored by the department and the University, and REU students often initiate others. We kick off the program with an ice cream social, allowing students to meet their mentors and advisors in an informal atmosphere. Students from REU programs across campus are invited to attend a pizza party at the conclusion of the first week of the program. Our REU students are housed in a modern dormitory with a pool, and later in the summer, a pool party is sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research. The department has organized barbeques and trips to attend baseball games. Students are enrolled in our recreation sports program to allow them to use our excellent facilities, and in the past students have created intramural teams and joined outdoor excursions. When research schedules allow, past students have organized weekend trips to Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and Houston.

June 24 – August 23, 2013

(deadline: February 15, 2013)

The Northwestern University Materials Research Science & Engineering Center offers a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)program over a 9-week period each summer.

The NU-Materials Research Science and Engineering Center is an interdisciplinary program focused on multi-functional nanoscale material structures. Over 35 faculty from 9 different departments are involved. REU students will have the opportunity to contribute to a research project led by a center faculty member and will participate in interdisciplinary research group meetings, expanding their science and engineering experience into a range of fields. Students with an interest in nanomaterials and majoring in a science or engineering field are encouraged to apply. Each student will be assigned to a graduate student or post-doctoral associate mentor who will work closely with them.

For an overview of Center research, please view the MRSEC research and highlights websites. Past projects have included polymer nanocomposites, nanopyramid fabrications, synthesis of functional molecules, electronic band structure calculations, and art conservation. A list of some previous projects is available. A range of projects each summer is available both in experimental and theoretical/simulation fields.

The participants write a technical paper at the end of the summer and give a 15-minute presentation on their research at a symposium that is open to the public. Other activities include a field trip to a national or industrial lab, a beach party, and a panel discussion about graduate school and seminars by Northwestern faculty and graduate students. On-campus housing is offered to all participants, so you may be living on the same hallway as your colleagues. Chicago is only a half an hour away with easily accessible public transportation and the Taste of Chicago takes place in early July.
REU participants receive a stipend of $4,500, plus on-campus housing and a travel allowance. The program dates for the summer of 2013 are June 24 to August 23. Since our start date is later than most other REU programs, this is the perfect summer program for students whose schools are on the quarter-system!

While there is no strict GPA requirement, the GPA of admitted students is typically above 3.5. There is an opportunity for you to explain if difficult circumstances have detracted from your GPA, and we do look favorably upon students who can work through adversity. Most recipients are rising junior and seniors. We seldom admit younger students, though if you have already had some independent research experience, you may still be in the running. You must not have completed your degree before the program begins. The program is open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
